Silent Walking Meditation with Goats

  • Angeles Crest Creamery 19830 Big Pines Highway Valyermo, CA, 93563 United States (map)

We will meet at 9am at the barn for coffee & tea and a quick discussion and then head out into the forest with the goats.

During the walk, which will last about 2 hours, participants are encouraged not to take photos or speak to others. Using standard mindfulness techniques and concepts from the Japanese practice of shinrin-yoku ("forest bathing"), we will reconnect with our senses and our relationship to our surroundings. These techniques will be reviewed quickly before heading out on the hike--I will not guide the meditation.

Around 11:30am a light vegetarian shepherd's lunch will be delivered to us, and as we eat, guests are welcome to discuss their experience.

For fun, guests can measure their blood pressure before and after the meditation. I'm curious to see the results since lowering blood pressure is supposed to be one of the main benefits of shinrin-yoku practice.

What to bring: Mug or thermos for coffee/tea, refillable water bottle, layered clothing including long pants and comfy shoes, hat for protection from the sun.

What not to bring: Animals, especially dogs (we have plenty of our own).

How to find us: Angeles Crest Creamery is located in the San Gabriel Mountains overlooking the Antelope Valley, a 90 minute drive from most parts of Los Angeles. We recommend taking the 14 to the 138 to Largo Vista -- this is the easiest route; your GPS may provide an alternative. The entrance to the ranch is about half a mile West of Largo Vista on Big Pines Hwy. Please do not disturb the private residences just West of Largo Vista--keep driving until you see the big red barn. There is a small white "Angeles Crest Creamery" sign next to the metal gate. Park on Big Pines Hwy and walk onto the property. Sorry, driving on the property is not allowed.

Our educational events are also fundraisers for our project, so we sell tickets. If you would like to attend but are not in a position to buy a ticket, please email us and we will accommodate you.

We are a operational ranch and there are real dangers here including goats with horns, sharp stuff to step on and rocks to trip over. By purchasing this ticket you agree to defend and hold harmless Gloria Putnam and Angeles Crest Creamery in the event of any claim arising from your visit to the ranch.
