Join us as we celebrate the Santa Monica Public Library’s Annual Green Prize for Sustainable Literature Awards with a screening of Rancher, Farmer, Fisherman, a documentary based on Miriam Horn’s Green Prize Award-winning book of the same name.
The Green Prize is a book award, presented by Santa Monica’s Public Library and the Office of Sustainability and the Environment. In 2007, the Green Prize was created in order to recognize the authors, illustrators, photographers and publishers whose goal is to broaden the public’s awareness of sustainability. To date, the Green Prize for Sustainable Literature has recognized over a hundred titles.
Conservation heroes of the American heartland
Rancher, Farmer, Fisherman tells the inspiring story of heartland conservation heroes who are feeding the world while stewarding the land and water.
The film is a tribute to people like Justin Knopf, a fifth-generation Kansas farmer revolutionizing industrial scale agriculture to rebuild the fertility, biodiversity and resilience of his soil, and Dusty Crary, a fourth-generation Montana rancher who forged alliances between cattlemen, federal agencies, hunters and environmental groups to protect the Rocky Mountain Front.
Based on a book by best-selling author Miriam Horn of Environmental Defense Fund, Rancher, Farmer, Fisherman was directed by Oscar nominee and Emmy winner Susan Froemke and Emmy winner John Hoffman, and narrated by award-winning journalist Tom Brokaw.
A Panel discussion moderated by Laura Avery, CIty of Santa Monica Farmers Market Supervisor will follow the screening. The panel will include Sarah Rathbone, co-founder of Dock to Dish, a local seafood company that sources directly from local sustainable fishermen and connects them to local restaurants and Meredith Bell, a rancher from Autonomy Farms in Bakersfield where she works with her sister and brother in law to raise purebred Angus cattle as well as pasture raised chickens and fresh produce.
